Registering your arrival
8 days
Within 8 days of arriving. With: Residents’ registration office of your municipality.
Cantonal deadline of 8 days, shorter than the 14 days set by federal law for EU/EFTA nationals.
Documents to bring
- Valid passport or ID card (every member of the household)
- Signed employment contract or confirmation of employment
- Tenancy agreement or proof of accommodation
- Civil status documents (marriage, children’s birth) depending on your situation

Health insurance premium reductions (subsidies)
On application (regional social insurance agency or online), with no deadline; the subsidy starts on the 1st day of the month after you apply. Renewal is then automatic.
Competent office: Office vaudois de l’assurance-maladie (OVAM)
Insuring your contents against fire (compulsory)
Compulsory for everyone resident in the canton: household contents must be insured against fire and natural hazards with ECA, the cantonal insurer. An existing household insurance policy with an authorised Swiss insurer can be kept until it expires, at most five years after moving to the canton.
Vehicle: registration and driving licence
Competent cantonal office: Service des automobiles et de la navigation (SAN)
